Afterschool Professional Development in New York State
In March 2010, NYSAN published a Guide to Afterschool Professional Development in New York State to offer detailed information about learning, development, and training opportunities for afterschool professionals. Afterschool providers are strongly encouraged to read through this Guide, which includes:
- Standard Professional Development Definitions
- Distinction Between Individual Professional Development and Program Recognition
- Overview of Three Frameworks for Professional Competencies
- Opportunities for Professional Development
- Resources and Research on Professional and Workforce Development
- School-Age Child Care Licensed Programs: Staff Qualifications and Training Requirements
NYSAN Quality Self-Assessment (QSA) Tool Survey Report
In 2009, NYSAN conducted a survey of afterschool practitioners to learn more about how they use the QSA Tool and the impact of self-assessment on their programs. The survey also included questions for practitioners who have not chosen to use the QSA Tool.
Notably, over 75% of responses indicate that the use of the QSA Tool provided benefits and created changes in their program, and that the QSA Tool is most useful in increasing family involvement and advancing linkages to day school.
Please see the full survey report or executive summary for more information.
Expanding the Role of Afterschool Programs in Promoting Health and Wellness
Physical health and wellness are among the core developmental needs critical to child well-being, and afterschool programs are venues that can support good health by providing nutritious food, creating opportunities for physical activity, and offering health education. NYSAN's new policy brief focuses on the issues related to child and youth health, the resources afterschool programs provide, and how to expand the role of afterschool programs to better promote healthy physical development.
